Other Mind-Body Resources

I am always researching and reading more about the mind-body connection.  One of the most helpful things you can do as you use a mind-body approach is find lots of evidence in favor of mind-body healing and knowledge about how/why it works from several sources.  This page is updated regularly to include new resources I find useful or think you might benefit from.  I’m categorizing them to try to help you sort through and decide what you need.  Don’t think you need to read/listen to all of them, of course.  If it’s not on my list, I either forgot, haven’t finished reading it, don’t like it, or don’t know about it!  So do tell.  And, of course, these are just resources – I don’t use every last little tidbit from each of these, but cull what works for me and what feels right to me.  Always do the same for yourself!

Books

There are so many helpful ones, so this list is always growing!  Pick the ones that feel right to you – use your intuition to help you find a starting place!

The Mindbody Prescription by John Sarno, M.D.

Timeless Healing by Herbert Benson, M.D.

The Relaxation Response by Herbert Benson, M.D.

When the Body Says No by Gabor Mate, M.D.

Molecules of Emotion: The Science Behind Mind-Body Medicine by Candace Pert, Ph.D.

Quantum Healing by Deepak Chopra

A Headache in the Pelvis by David Wise, Ph.D

The Biology of Belief by Bruce Lipton, Ph.D

Emotional Longevity by Norman Anderson, Ph.D.

Full Catastrophe Living by John Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D.

The Mindful Way through Depression by John Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D.

Websites

www.runningpain.com (Very helpful information for moving beyond Sarno – I actually prefer the edition of his book prior to The Master Practice, so email him for that one.  If you read The Master Practice and have pelvic pain, do not do the root lock he describes.  It can increase pelvic pain if you haven’t had a prior deep-breathing practice.  It’s something you want to work up to by first learning basic diaphragmatic breathing.)

www.yourpainisreal.com The work of Dr. Howard Schubiner.  He has a 4-week course available for mind-body work utilizing mindfulness techniques and the work of Dr. John Sarno.  Read his blog, check it all out, and give it a try if it speaks to you!

www.barrattbreathworks.com Kathleen Barratt’s site about breathwork.  Find out more, and if you live nearby or in an area where she is giving a workshop, I highly recommend it!

Meditation Resources

There are so many different kinds of meditation and so many meditation resources, so what calls to you might be totally different than what calls to me!  Meditation in general is incredibly helpful in creating a strong mind-body connection.  Here are a few resources to get you started.

Jack Kornfield – he has a number of fantastic meditation CD’s.  I like his Meditation for Beginners book if you’re just starting out.

Pema Chodron – she also has a number of fantastic meditation CD’s.
